Live

Live have been a major influence on Your Scarecrows sound and approach to songwriting. Here's a brief history and some recommended listening.

Band History

Live formed out of four friends from High school in Pennsylvania, America. Their first album called Mental Jewellery came out in 1991 and mixed college rock sensibilities with singer Ed Kowalcyks spiritual interests. They were often described as a mix of Pearl Jam and R.E.M. but on their second album Throwing Copper they eclipsed any work from both of those bands. Quite simply, Throwing copper is one of the best albums ever made and it gave live a big hit all over the world.

On Throwing Copper live get it right. The album has a ton of hit singles such as "Lightning Crashes" and "I alone" as well as more expansive cresendo monsters like "White, Discusssion". The lyrics of Ed Kowalcyk can often be so steeped in spirituality as to lose all meaning but on Throwing copper the lyrics mix elements of subjects such as small town life, politics and life and death. The album builds and builds and the last half of it is just pure genious. As you can tell by now, im a big fan.

Live's recroding history after Throwing Copper has been mixed. The two albums after ("Secret Samadhi and "The distance to Here") are also fantastic pieces of work but don't quite reach the heights of their biggest album. Their fifth album "v" goes in every direction and includes the singer rapping, samples and all kinds of crazy crap. It's okay if you approach it with no expectations but quite a let down after the previous albums.

Live picked up considerably on their sixth album "Birds of Pray" It has great riffs and tunes mixed with barmy and down to earth lyrics which make Lives music so interesting. As for their seventh album "songs from black mountain". I've read some favourable reviews of ir but I found it pretty bland.
