Pearl Jam

New song the Fixer

Pearl Jam have been a major influence on Your Scarecrows sound and approach to songwriting. Here's a brief history and some recommended listening.

Band history

Pearl Jam formed in 1991 out of the remains of Seattle band Mother Love Bone. Previous MLB members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament got together with Guitarist Mike Mcready and recorded a 3 track demo which ended up in the hands of San Diego surfer / petrol attendant Eddie Vedder. Eddie put lyrics to the songs sent the tape back and bingo, the rest of the band heard the songs, loved them and invited him to join the band. Pearl Jam released their debut album ten in 1991 amidst the grunge scene which at the time was the focus of the mainstream media.

At the same time Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Nirvana were all having massive success. For the first half of the nineties Grunge dominated the American music scene. Pearl Jam had massive commercial success with their first album which allowed them to do whatever they wanted for the rest of their career. They were unhappy with being media superstars so they took deliberate steps to not play the game such as refusing to make music videos or turn up to awards shows.

Career Highlights

Pearl Jam have released eight studio albums as well as numerous live albums. In 2000 they released a live recording of each of the dates on their american tour to offer an alternative to bootlegging.
